good morni, america. breaking news, ambassador attacked. north korea this morning praises the stabbing of a top u.s. diplomat slashed with a ten-inch knife. >> i need an ambulance fast. >> the close adviser to president obama, rushed to the hospital bleeding from his face and arm. the assailant wrestled to the ground. real questions raised about security for ambassadors around the world. happening now, snow emergency. 24 states from texas to new england on alert. icy roads causing massive pileups. planes stranded on runways for hours. melting snow leading to flooding. this bridge washed away in seconds. school canceled for more than a million kids this morning. is that a fraternity? >> nasty neighbors, like a scene from the summer comedy. one family's real-life nightmare.

living next door to a fraternity. the outrageous behavior caught on camera. ♪ got to give it up ♪ and pharrell not giving up anything in court. the superstar taking the stand in the "blurred lines" trial claiming he didn't rip off the marvin gaye classic. and wait until you hear how much money the smash hit song really earned. ♪ got to give it up got to give it up ♪ ♪ keep on dancing ♪ you just can't help but move and groove to marvin gaye. that's the song at the center of that "blurred lines" trial. we'll have more on that ahead. and we have so much to get to. this morning that massive storm sweeping across the country dropping snow from texas to new york, six states declaring an emergency. more than 2400 flights canceled. >> ginger and our team on that. in a minute. but we begin with that breaking news. look at these dramatic pictures. right here. the u.s. ambassador to south

korea, mark lippert, viciously slashed at a breakfast speech. north korea is praising the attack as the ambassador recovers in a hospital this morning. abc's terry moran has all the latest. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. this was a truly frightening attack raising real questions about security for american diplomats around the world. an undefended ambassador. the assailant walking up to him armed with a ten-inch knife. and out for blood. it was a very close call. >> i'm bleeding here. i'm bleeding here. i need an ambulance fast. get me to the hospital. >> reporter: this is u.s. ambassador mark lippert moments after being attacked by a knife-wielding korean nationalist and this is the man named by police as kim ki-jung who shouted north and south korea should be reunified, slashing away with this knife, before he was wrestled to the ground. ambassador lippert, an iraq war veteran defended himself from the attack. lippert was rushed to a hospital where he was treated for deep cuts to his face, his arm and

his hand. he's had 80 stitches. he's in stable condition and is expected to remain in the hospital for the next few days. lippert is close to president obama. advising him during the 2008 campaign, then moving to the white house to serve on the national security council staff before becoming ambassador to south korea. tensions between north and south korea have spiked this week, as the u.s. and south korea conduct annual military exercises in north korean media have issued dire threats in response. the attacker was still shouting against those joint exercises as he was led away by police strapped to a gurney. ambassador lippert kept his cool throughout the incident. shortly after he was stitched up tweeting, doing well and in great spirits. and though north korea praised this assault as a knife attack of justice there's no evidence of any involvement there. the real question now, how did a guy with a knife like that get so close? robin. >> and people want the answer to that question as you know, terry, thank you. now to that winter blast stretching from dallas to new

england this morning affecting more than 90 million americans. school has been canceled for more than a million students. and more than 2,000 flights canceled already. our extreme team, you know they're tracking it all, and ginger starts us here off in times square. ginger. >> right in times square where the flakes have become quite fat. we've got that snow globe effect and we just transitioned to snow. but there are parts of kentucky that has more than 20 inches. let's look at the radar long island will get some of the heavier totals but some of the heftiest south and west of us, frozen precipitation for 1500 miles. so many folks, including those in louisville this morning, under a winter storm warning and that's where we find our alex perez. alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, ginger. more than 1.5 million students home from school today because of the weather. here in louisville they got more than 8 inches and once the snow started it seemed it would never stop. overnight,

a traffic nightmare. motorists stranded for hours. backup 20 miles long. one driver tweeted i haven't moved since 9:00 p.m. last night. the nation guard called in to help. moving drivers to warming stations to get food and water. in illinois, this semi lost control and ended up in the median. whiteout conditions left wreck after wreck. melting snow making for mayhem. >> look how fast that is. >> reporter: in west virginia, this bridge washed away in just seconds. chunks of ice filling rivers, and in ohio, ice the size of mattresses ending up on the road and in dallas -- >> we were on the tarmac for about 3 1/2 hours. >> reporter: -- passengers fuming in ft. worth after a few inches of snow left them stranded, their flight later canceled, leaving them to seek shelter at the airport. and no relief for passengers just yet.

already more than 2400 flights canceled this morning and that number only expected to go up as the day goes on. now let's go to rob marciano who is in philadelphia this morning. hey, rob. >> reporter: hi, alex. flights canceled here in philadelphia. but we come to you from the abc news road cam at the base of the art museum steps here in philadelphia. take a look. better known as the "rocky" steps and philadelphia will be fighting against mother nature. they have 350 plows and salt trucks at the ready. look ahead and you can see that the roads here, the ben franklin parkway is at least for now wet but the sides of the roads, the grassy area beginning to see snow accumulate. they couldn't pretreat the roads because it was raining last night. the plan of attack is to salt after accumulation begins and 4 to 8 expected. they've only seen 4.8 for the entire year. they're probably get that today. back to you in new york. >> thanks, rob. so many people are doubling what they've already had this season. a lot of folks back to even louisiana, arkansas, talking

about frozen precipitation. new orleans this morning dropped almost 20 degrees in just 50 minutes. that's how powerful this cold front is. let's go right back to the map, and you can see those temperature differences. 70 in mobile. jackson, mississippi, 34. so you know it's happening. that cold air coming behind and that's going to be the frozen precipitation. it'll come not just as snow but ice and snow. the heaviest snow falling from baltimore back to the west through west virginia. i'm making a declaration because it's so cold, i'm wearing boots and leg warmers until it goes above 40, all right. george. >> okay, ginger, now get inside. we're going to turn now to the boston marathon trial that opened yesterday. with a stunning admission. the defense said that dzhokhar tsarnaev set the bombs but argued his brother was the mastermind and manipulator. abc's brian ross is covering the trial in boston. brian, we also heard emotional testimony from a string of victims. >> reporter: that's right, george, good morning, this city is reliving the horror of those attacks with often tearful testimony and dramatic new videos not made public until now.

more new, disturbing videos are expected today of the two explosions on that festive spring race day. for the first time the jury saw this footage of the first bomb blast near the marathon finish line and then in the distance, the second, much more powerful blast. the chaos and the carnage in the aftermath caught on tape by a wounded spectator. >> get her out of here. >> reporter: frantic emergency workers tried to treat the most seriously injured. >> you're okay. >> reporter: inside a nearby sports store, stunned and wounded spectators stumble in and the store manager uses running clothes to fix a tourniquet on the leg of a badly injured woman. others ripped clothes off the rack to be used as tourniquets for the many left fighting for their lives that day, are now attending this trial including marc fucarile who lost his right leg. >> reliving the situation and the circumstance that happened that day when we mention the ones we lost that day. the ones that really should be remembered.

>> reporter: in court, dzhokhar tsarnaev's lawyer judy clarke flatly stated it was him, admitting he was responsible for the senseless, horrific, misguided acts, but she pointed to this video of tsarnaev and his older brother tamerlan about to plant their bombs to claim her client was only following the path created by his older brother later killed in a police shootout. it's a strategy to persuade the jury that the younger brother should get life in prison, not the death penalty. but prosecutors this morning will continue to make the case that tsarnaev was not some misguided, misdirected adolescent but instead, a committed terrorist in his own right a soldier in a holy war, out to punish america. >> all right there, brian ross in boston, thank you. turn to dan abrams. what do you think of the strategy of the defense? >> it's kind of the only strategy. you've got video of him. you've got his scrawlings in the boat. there's almost no defense for him to suggest he didn't do it. you know, typically this would be the sort of case where you

might see the defendant say i'll plead guilty and i'll admit it, just take the death penalty off the table and in most cases prosecutors would accept that. not in this case. they're not taking the death penalty off the table for him. >> so, is it proper for them to say it's more of his brother's fault? >> not really. meaning as a legal matter, they can't say it's more his fault than it is mine. the judge has made that clear, too. the judge has said you're not going to be saying he's more at fault but what they can be saying is explaining how this all happened and that's what the defense is going to do. they're going to explain in their view why this happened, how this happened, but they have to be very careful about not doing exactly what you just said. >> the defense wanted to move it out of state. you think it was right that the judge says no here. >> it affected everyone. i mean, the notion that people in massachusetts were more affected by this than people in other places in the country -- look, if you had someone who you knew personally who was directly impacted by this, you're probably not going to be on this jury but, when you're talking about generally people knew

about the case, impacted by the case, this is a case that affected the country. >> okay, i know we'll be talking about this for days to come. thank you very much, dan. we're going to turn now to the latest fallout from the controversy over hillary clinton's e-mails. she responded overnight with a tweet saying she's asked the state department to publicly release her e-mails and this comes after a house committee investigating the benghazi terror attacks subpoenaed that personal e-mail account. jon karl joins us with the latest. which e-mails will the public see and when will we see them? >> reporter: george, this will basically be the honor system. the e-mails to be released will come from the 55,000 pages of e-mails mrs. clinton turned over to the state department late last year but, remember, those were e-mails that she and her team reviewed. she chose which of her e-mails to turn over to the state department. so, the bottom line is, people will have to trust that she has turned over all relevant official documents to the state department. as for when, the state department only will say it'll take some time to review the e-mails. i would expect this process to take months, not weeks. >> and, jon, there had been some

suggestions earlier that some laws may not have been fully followed, is that still the case? >> reporter: that's what the congress is investigating. it looks, the white house believes, if she did what she said she did she followed the letter of the law if not the spirit of the law. >> jon karl, thanks very much. let's go to amy with the other top stories. big scare for airline passengers. >> that's right. an emergency on the runway in denver. passengers on a us airways forced to evacuate after smoke filled the cabin and the terrifying moments that followed. here's abc's david kerley. >> reporter: they didn't make it to the gate after landing. passengers and crew, more than 160 of them, using emergency slides to get off this jetliner in denver. >> what the [ bleep ] is going on. >> reporter: that's brooks robinson who recorded his slide out of the airbus jet. >> we had to evacuate off the airplane. >> reporter: the u.s. air/ american airlines flight from charlotte just landed in denver. controllers were surprised.

>> we do have people exiting the aircraft down slides. >> reporter: passengers say the pilot hit the brakes hard when they landed and then the cabin started filling with smoke. >> i can't really pinpoint where it came from. it was like a light fog at first and then it started to thicken a little bit. >> reporter: with smoke in his cabin the pilot declared an emergency. >> they came over the loudspeaker and just screaming, evacuate, evacuate, evacuate. >> it's really a pilot's worst nightmare to have to deal with either fire or smoke in an airplane. >> reporter: there was one minor injury. firefighters went through the cabin looking for hot spots but didn't find any. this morning, still a mystery what caused all that smoke that led to this emergency evacuation on the snowy denver tarmac. david kerley, abc news, washington. >> our thanks to david for that. new protests in ferguson, missouri, overnight, following that scathing report on the police department. at least four demonstrators were arrested for blocking traffic outside police headquarters. hours after the announcement that the officer who fatally shot michael brown will not face federal charges. meanwhile, in response to the justice department's report that found systemic bias against

african-americans, the mayor says a police official has been fired for sending racist e-mails to others, two others are under investigation. well, a superbug linked to a contaminated medical instrument found at a second major hospital in los angeles. four patients were infected at cedars-sinai. 71 others may have been exposed. the bacteria cre which is resistant to antibiotics can kill up to 50% of infected patients. two patients died in a similar outbreak at ucla medical center. well, president obama's signature health care law is now in the hands of a divided supreme court. the four liberal justices seem ready to side with the administration's claim that it is legal to use federal subsidies to make health insurance more affordable but it's unclear if any conservative justice will join them. and finally, next time you go on one of those safari parks, do yourself a favor, lock your car doors or this could happen. stand wednesday admitting, i must have been channeling that feeling, that late-'70s feeling while writing the hit he claims in less than an hour. but the prolific producer maintaining he and co-writer robin thicke did not rip off marvin gaye's 1977 hit "got to give it up." when asked do you think "blurred lines" has the feel of "got to give it up," the singer adamantly responding, feel, not infringement. williams also testifying that at no point in the song's production did gaye's classic come to mind. >> if jurors believe that he was not inspired by marvin gaye, but rather by, you know, the songs he heard in the 1970s growing up, you know, they may have a chance at prevailing. >> reporter: but when a musicologist brought in by gaye's family later played stripped-down snippets of the williams testified it sounds like you're playing the same thing. that's the argument being made by the children of the late soul legend who want in on a piece of

we can't wait to see it. i know i can't. this is absolutely amazing. never seen a dog like this. all right, back to you, robin. >> 175 pounds. that's a bigun'. >> sweet. >> uh-huh. all right. that's ahead. but we're going to begin this half hour with opening statements in that gripping trial out of north carolina. a rising young political strategist stabbed to death in her home by a close friend. his lawyers admit that he did do it but they claim he was mentally unraveling. abc's linzie janis has that story for us. >> this is a tragedy. >> reporter: in court wednesday, emotional opening arguments in the trial of john broyhill accused of murdering his best friend's wife. >> you've now been selected and empaneled to serve as jurors. >> reporter: jamie hahn was a rising star, a fund-raiser with her own firm. >> your hearts will break. she was young, 29. >> reporter: broyhill, the best man at hahn's wedding has

pleaded not guilty to first degree murder. but on wednesday, a bombshell. his own lawyers admitting he did, indeed, stab hahn, but arguing it wasn't premeditated. saying the only person broyhill planned to injure that spring day two years ago was himself. >> john was determined to take his own life. >> reporter: but prosecutors say broyhill, who worked for hahn's consulting firm, embezzled almost $50,000 from a campaign fund and decided to kill jamie hahn when she started asking questions. >> somebody stabbed her and she's bleeding so badly. >> reporter: stabbing her multiple times, then attacking her husband, his best friend, when he tried to intervene. >> the person is still in the house, and we need the police as soon as possible. >> reporter: broyhill then turning the knife on himself. prosecutors telling jurors broyhill told a series of bizarre lies in the run-up to the murder. >> the defendant makes recorded admissions to investigators

confessing to lying about having ms, to lying about having gallbladder surgery, to lying about having pancreatic cancer. >> reporter: the defense calling those lies evidence of broyhill's mental unraveling and saying he had no plan to murder his friend. >> he had no motive to kill those he loved. something snapped. >> reporter: broyhill's attorneys say he should face a lesser charge of second degree murder which would mean a sentence of 12 years to life in prison. he does, though, face charges of first degree murder and attempted murder and faces life without parole. george. >> a lot at stake. okay linzie, thanks very much. we turn now to a nasty feud that echoes the raunchy hollywood comedy "neighbors." a fraternity next door to smu is said to be verbally abusive doing disgusting things to his property and caught it on camera and abc's kendis gibson has the story. >> reporter: so much for loving thy neighbor.

this surveillance video capturing what tim o'connell calls this a nightmare next door. >> we've got garbage thrown over the fence. beer cans, cigarette butts. >> reporter: o'connell lives in this beautiful home in a wealthy dallas neighborhood. the problem, he says, his next-door neighbors are a group of southern methodist university students have been harassing him. >> they tell me to [ bleep ] myself all the time. >> reporter: not just say it but the guys spell it out in his front yard. we've blurred the vulgarity here. another camera captured a young man tossing what's believed to be raw meat into o'connell's backyard. >> they told me they pay rent and they can do whatever they want. >> reporter: some of the students members of sigma chi fraternity. overnight the organization's national chapter announced an indefinite suspension of the smu chapter saying we do not condone or endorse the actions we have been made aware of. >> is that a fraternity?

>> reporter: o'connell's neighbor drama reminiscent of the comedy "neighbors." >> yeah! >> reporter: but in real life it's no laughing matter for residents across the country, one neighbor living on the edge of berkeley's fraternity row captured students relieving themselves and a lot more. >> there you can see the two guys naked, you know, running up the street. >> reporter: back in dallas no comment from o'connell's young neighbors but smu says it's working with police to identify the students involved. for "good morning america," kendis gibson, abc news, los angeles. >> makes you so thankful when you have good neighbors. >> uh-huh. >> wow. let's go to amy in the social square with "the speed feed." >> let's talk about love, robin and george. trending on youtube and facebook, a wonderful video and it's called love has no labels. i want you to take a look at this. it's going crazy online. 40 million views in just two days. it's from the ad council as part of its anti-bias campaign and it celebrates the many faces of love and respect and shows couples of different races, people of different abilities, different faiths, different

them ka reaping into oncoming traffic. watch again from multiple angles. the windshield falls out behind the bus, a wake of destruction, the husband and wife in that car seriously injured. it happened in west bloomfield michigan around 6:00 p.m. last october. the driver quickly admitting to investigators what went wrong. >> what happened? >> i fell asleep coming down that hill. >> reporter: on wednesday that bus driver leon rasheed was in court, 65 years old pleading not guilty to a criminal charge and says he has medical issues. >> what would you say to the people you hurt. >> i told them i was sorry. >> reporter: each week an estimated 2 million americans nod off at the wheel. accounting for nearly 2 million crashes each year. in 2011 this horrendous bus crash on i-95 in virginia killed four and injured dozens more. the ntsb said driver fatigue was a factor in the crash. that driver is now serving six

transmit content that is hateful, abusive or otherwise objectionable by burnbook users but the app and similar ones like after school app have kearns of online threats expose exposing kids to signcyberbullies. 17-year-old tailor experienced this firsthand. >> somebody said tatum should get cancer like his mother and die. i was very hurt that somebody would say that to me. that just really hit deep. >> reporter: and parents crying foul like this father in san diego who didn't want to be identified. he says his he says his high school-aged daughter was a target. >> vulgarity and i think it's

wrong. >> these apps create a huge problem for teenagers because there are devastating effects. >> reporter: burnbook's ceo say they do not condone bullying. anonymity is a privilege, not a right, they say, abuse that privilege and there will be consequences. some schools now taking action. that san diego school district sending a message to middle school and high school families, warning them that charges may result from posting threatening or inappropriate messages adding, threats are not jokes. some schools are trying to block access to apps like this over school networks but since the users are anonymous, the key here really is for parents to talk to their kids. that way if an issue comes up they can try to identify the anonymous tormenter and tell authorities. >> absolutely. let's talk about this. ericka souter is here. boy, it's easy to see why parents would get upset about this. >> more and more parents are being alarmed. we grew up and bullying meant being physically hit. now it takes on a totally different meaning and one in three kids say they have been the victim of cyberbullying. parents hear that and they see more and more kids attempt suicide because of cyberbullying and they get how dangerous this

is for their children. >> so where does the law stand on this? we've seen the disclaimers. does that protect them? >> it's tough to stop the apps because the apps themselves are protected in a sense immune from prosecution for the offensive content their users post so, while parents may be saying, well, we can't get the apps and website, you can get the bully. laws are stepping up to say, if you bully online you could be subject to criminal harassment, stalking and some states have gone further passing laws saying to bullies, if you're caught bullying you could be subject from anything from suspension to jail time. >> of course, that would require lifting the veil of anonymity. but, can you do that in the apps? >> no, that's going to be tough to do. that's why the parent/kid connection is so important. getting a sense of who the tormentors should be. and trying to figure that out. >> what should parents do? >> you have to question your kids. make sure, you know, they're not going to be open and honest about bullying at all times so they might be embarrassed about it let them know you're there to help them not judge and

guy that creates that has created this purely artificially intelligent robot called chappie and i can tell you it's not one of those futuristic movies where the robots -- you fall in love with this character except mine. he thinks it's the worst thing that could ever happen. >> you talk about neill and his films are entertaining and make you think and feel and i did. i fell in love with chappie. >> i don't want to add took place but my wife cried at the end of the movie. in a way this robot which is -- when the robot is switched on for the first time it's like a pure innocent child. this blank slate so this robot is stolen by this gang and so put in this completely dysfunctional violent background and it's a bit of an argument about nature versus nurture. are we a product of our environment? or genetics. you fall in love with this character. >> yeah. your character, my goodness, you heard the comments from the crew members.
